Today I’m pissed off at my Sarcoidosis!

It bothers me that there is a disease called Sarcoidosis that people don’t talk about because I guess it’s not a bigger disease.  Not looking for any sympathy, really.  I’m just what a person would call pissed off.  Rightfully so.  It sneaks up on you when you don’t have time, when you have stuff to do… like a business to run, a family to take care of..you know life.  It has no respect.  It doesn’t give you a warning when you are about to have a flare up.  You just walk around life avoiding sick people because you know you have this autoimmune disease that loves to lower your ability to fight off illness blah blah blah.

Oh but today.  I’M PISSED OFF. (more…)

Veggie of the Month: Tumeric by Savannah Grace Carter

August is Turmerific!Hello family! Welcome to our new plant of the month blog series! My name is Savannah Grace. I am a 9 year old girl who lives in North Carolina with my mom and spends summers in Michigan with my dad. I love to read fiction books and write short stories. I draw pictures of animals in my spare time, my favorite color is magenta and I think eating healthy is important! I am also proud to say I am Auntie Que’s niece! One day while visiting Auntie Que's business, The Kitchen, I thought it would be cool for her to have a plant of the month for her store. She loved the idea and told me that I should write a blog. It was our idea to start this blog series about a new plant every month. I am happy to announce that the plant of the month for July is turmeric! Turmeric’s scientific name is Curcuma longa. I think that is so cool! I will use the 4-1-1 to share my excitement about turmeric. That is 4 fun facts about turmeric, one surprising fact, and my favorite fact!4 Fun Facts About Turmeric -Turmeric has more than 50 types of use! This includes tea, skin uses, spices, soups, and more!-Turmeric has the potential to help prevent heart diseases, cancer and Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s is a very bad disease. It destroys memory and brain cells.-Turmeric is also referred to as roots and Indian saffron.  It was found in New Deli in the time period of B.C.-Turmeric is a yellow-ish powder and it has helped some people to lose weight1 Thing That May Surprise You About Turmeric:Too much turmeric can cause stomach aches, nausea, dizziness, and bathroom trips. Also the first 'r' in Turmeric is silent. That sure fooled me at first. 1 Thing I Love About Turmeric:My favorite thing about turmeric is how it is used as a ceremonial plant in Asia. Turmeric is a very important part of their culture. It is also identified as the Golden Spice! This is Savannah Grace saying thanks for hearing me out.  See ya next month!

Late Lent Starters?

You ever get so busy that you know you are supposed to be doing something, but you can’t remember what?

How did I forget Lent was here.  What’s even worse, I didn’t have a thought about giving anything up. Like literally.  I hear and see everyone talk about, I’m giving up sweets, drinking, eating...blah blah blah.

I think, it’s almost become so commercial, it’s like a New Years Resolution.  Remember that? The thing that is promised to do… but never lives past like the last day of January! Smh.

Lent is supposed to be a journey, sacrificial, its to represent the time Jesus was in the wilderness preparing for his ministry work.

And I. Forgot.

#InsertPalmToFaceEmojiHere  smh.

So, I am not going to beat myself up.  I’m going to deal with it, and face it head on.

What I plan on giving up for the next 40 days, and hopefully it starts a new habit……

WORRY

I’m giving up worrying.  It’s not healthy for you.  It makes you sick, mentally and physically.  It’s a waste of time, and God doesn’t make mistakes!  PERIOD!

So goodbye worry!  I don’t need you. Everything is going to be alright in it’s time

What did you give up for Lent?

Who’s Cooking for Christmas?

This is the question that the majority of the “Chefs” of the family hear!  It’s like.. did you really need to ask?  Ohhh ….. or are you being funny!  LOL!

It doesn’t even matter who’s house it’s at.  Everyone wants to know what I’m bringing!  My family used to be super petty and say, Quiana don’t bring none of that Vegan ish!   Now they don’t care, they just want to know that I’m cooking.  You know why… because no matter what I bring… they will eat it! #InJesusName!

This year I’m thinking about switching it up.  I just want something different.  I’m thinking Lasagna… maybe a pan for the Vegans and MeatEaters.  Doesn’t that sound yummy.  Honestly, I could be hungry right now, but that’s what I’m feeling right now!  For sides, I always want some greenage to go with pasta!  Maybe a Power Salad and Garlicky Green Beans for the win!  I’ll add some Portobello mushrooms to the green beans to sneak in more veggies in on the fam, but the taste of (more…)

Desserts – A healthier take on the Desserts you feed Yourself & Your Family!

Ok....

I tried not to give everyone the business on this topic, but the truth is.... IT'S TIME FOR CHANGE!

We need to change the thought process on desserts!

After dinner you think desserts are cakes, cookies, pies, pastries all that.  In my mind when I see it, I know we think that way because of the history,  because of those who came before us.  Desserts for holidays were pies, and cobblers.  Sweets.  High Fructose Corn Syrup. Sugars. All sugar everything.

Is Your Salmon Safe?

The fish industry, Salmon in particular, is facing an increase in parasites ... worms ... in this case - Sea Lice. Note that Sea Lice IS naturally present in Wild Caught Salmon, however it is thriving heavily in the Farm Raised environment, so much, that it is disruptive.

This could mean that the fish that ends up on your plate has the parasite (that you would then ingest) or toxic chemicals will be used to "control" the Sea Lice (that you would then ingest).

If you choose to eat fish as apart of your diet, be EXTREMELY CAREFUL and PICKY in your selection and source of fish as you don't want parasites to choose you as their new home. As yucky or extreme as that may sound - it's the truth guys - and if you must, we suggest you purchase Wild Caught over Farm Raised - as the fish comes from it's natural environment.

Protect your temple and consider transitioning to a more plant-based diet.

Let’s Keep it Cheesy: Daiya Cheese

Hi Family 🙂

We are talking about one of my favorite vegan cheeses today.  My go to for vegan cheese in many of my recipes is the one... the only Daiya.  It does exactly what I want a cheese to do, it melts, it stretches, it's pretty amazing!  It's completely vegan, soy free, diary free, nut free  its all around the best thing I've had since I went Vegan almost 4 years ago!!!!!

Check out the new Cooking With Que episode about Daiya , that I just posted!

Tradition or Not? Black Eye Peas for New Years

Can you believe the year is almost over? Wow! 2016 came and went! Everyone has been trying to figure out New Years Resolutions and since I'm a foodie I hear about party menus, and what everyone is cooking for New Years!

Black Eyed Peas (recipe here) are all over the place, for some its for good luck, for others it's tradition, so of course you know me I did my research to see where did the "luck" of Black Eye Peas come from. I was pretty shocked!
